Serving People

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37-40).

Loving God and loving people is what this life is all about.  It's what we were created for and it is what everything else rests on.  As a church, we need to put serving people as a community as a top priority.  The act of coming together to serve others is a major part of what the church experience should be.  How amazing would it be if when people thought of "church" they did not just think of a service on Sunday morning, but they thought of a group of people that they know and love going out and serving others.

Many people in the church today confuse helping people financially with serving people.  Giving financially is important for a lot of reasons, but it should not be our only method of service.  We are not just called to pay other people to serve people for us, we are called to serve people and love people as a lifestyle.

What would happen to your church if once a month, instead of doing a normal service, your entire church body went out and served people?  Some people might feel inconvenienced that they couldn't just show up to church on Sunday and sit for an hour and fill their church quota for the week.  But what would it do for the community around you and for the members of the church?  It would be life changing to put your faith in action like that and put serving people ahead of comfortable chairs.
