Each type of small groups has it's own strengths and weaknesses.  We suggest being aware of what those attributes are and making an effort to strengthen the weak areas to make each group well rounded. 

Activity based groups, for example, can be great at forming friendships and bonds but they are not always as good at facilitating real spiritual growth and reflection.  We suggest taking a break from the activity once a month and mixing in a focused discussion or lesson.

Small groups that are more focused on discussions and lessons, on the other hand, need to be careful that they do not get stuck only discussing heavy topics without taking time to form friendships and relationships.  We suggest these groups take a break to do a social activity together at once a month.  Something with a more relaxed atmosphere where people can just talk and get to know each other, like a BBQ or a day at the park.
